Don’t Try This At Your Home

A (skinny) friend recently suggested that one way to squeeze my workouts in with my other commitments is to incorporate exercise throughout my day.

“Do squats while you put away dishes,” she suggested. “Lunge while you vacuum the floors. Wear wrist weights when you dust. Instead of carrying all of the laundry in one basket from room-to-room, make several trips so you get the extra walking in.”

This is all easy for her to say. As I mentioned, she’s skinny. She has no idea that by the time I’ve made one trip up- and downstairs I’m so covered with sweat that I might as well have not bothered showering that morning.

But I do see her point: a little bit of extra thought and effort can actually add up to using some muscles that might otherwise have gone neglected all day long.

Note to self: do not use the kitchen cabinet hardware as handles when doing those squats.

P.S. Don’t forget to buy replacement hardware now.

That’s hilarious! Are you a fan of King of Queens/Kevin James at all? He does a bit about breaking a sweat trying to peel an orange.

I haven’t caught his stand-up routine, but I’m not a fan at all of the King of Queens show. Maybe without the old guy on there I’d have liked it, but between his screaming and Carrie’s, it was just too much like my childhood.

I should try that maybe? Although I have a single level home but to walk a few extra steps I be able to manage. I may should start putting things myself away instead to tell the person walking in the direction I have stuff to put to take it and put it in the room. I started to do some extra movement. I no longer use a dryer, I hand my cloth outdoors and therefore have to do the “moves” twice to hang it up and take it down.

If all it took to lose weight was vigorous vacuuming and carrying around heavy laundry baskets (and toddlers, for that matter), I would be a size zero!

Well, true, it’s got to be exercise *in addition* to what we’re already getting. Considering that most of my day’s at one desk or another, a few squats while emptying dishes is definitely more than my usual.
