It’s Not Much But It’s More
I had an appointment early this morning, which meant that I was up, showered and out the door while my husband and son were still fast asleep. It also meant that by the time I came home, they were both waking up at the same time. So I left my husband to find breakfast for the two of them while I went to dust off my exercise bike.
Have I ever told you that I ride my exercise bike while laying down? No, really! It hurts my back to ride the normal way, and my butt gets so sore after a few minutes that I seldom stay on it for long. Then one day as I moaned about how I wish I’d bought a recumbent bike instead, my husband pointed out that I could simply lay on the floor and put my feet on the pedals, solving both problems at the same time.
Sure, it looks funny, but it makes riding the thing pain-free. Plus if I prop my head and shoulders on a few pillows I can actually read books while I pedal. On more energetic days, I can even do crunches or use hand-weights while “riding”, making my workout time that much more effective.
Today, I didn’t have that kind of pep, so I turned on the TV to catch some Headline News. When my husband came in to give me a kiss before heading off to work, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to take a quick break and see how long I’d been at it.
My goodness 45-minutes can fly by when you’re too busy watching TV to notice you’re exercising!
So that’s Day 1’s workout toward that sleek new shape I want to have by my 10th anniversary in July. Just 299 or so more to go!

I love it when you hit the zone. It is an awesome feeling. Sometimes (please don’t think me odd), I turn up the iPod while I am on the treadmill and I hold the rails and I close my eyes and lose myself in the music. I have been so “in the zone” before that my husband, who had been working out elsewhere in the gym, came up to talk to me, stood there watching me for a minute or two and when he touched my arm I nearly jumped right out of my skin. It’s almost like meditating while walking for me sometimes. I love that.

I used to get that feeling doing Tai Chi or shadow kickboxing, as odd as that might sound. It really is a neat feeling where you’re just right in the moment, and your mind seems present in every cell of your body.

That’s the only way I exercise anymore (except I’m upright on the recumbent bike). I TiVo an hour’s worth of television the day or night before and spend the time watching it on the bike. It’s the only thing that’s kept me consistent. Which is kind of sad, but HEY it works!

I have a feeling I’ll be more consistent about exercising if I move my workout times to the evening instead of trying to cram it in during the day. Mornings are my time to get online work done, and we start homeschool right after lunch. Trying to squeeze it in between those things means repeated interruptions, and after about the fourth one I wind up deciding to just skip it for the day.
Then again, moving exercise to the evenings cuts into Happy Hour, which may or may not be a bad thing… depending on which end of the glass you’re on.
