I’m Not Travelling Light
I’m down in Texas visiting my mother, and it feels like I haven’t stopped eating since the moment we stepped off the plane yesterday. Southern food is my weakness: fried okra, fried catfish, fried… anything… all topped with jalapenos, poblanos, gravy or all three.
Yesterday, I overdid it on the peppers: scrambled eggs with jalapenos and tomatoes for breakfast; a chile rellano and Spanish rice for lunch. By the time dinner rolled around I wasn’t in the least bit interested in food. In fact, I went to bed a bit early (we’d had to catch a 6 a.m. flight, after all, so I was exhausted) and wound up having those crazy post-spicy food dreams.
Today I’ve decided that even though I’m on vacation I shouldn’t let it completely blow my diet. So I’ve grabbed one of the hotel’s promotional pens and a little pad of paper so I can keep track of calories I’m consuming. In theory, this should help fend off overindulgence. In reality, I suck at math, so I won’t be surprised if I get home to find I’ve gained two or three pounds.
On the bright side: it’s smoking hot here. The temps reached 105 F yesterday, although today they’re expected to be a comparatively chilly 99 F. So if I do manage to get home without gaining any weight, it’s probably due to the water weight loss with all the sweating I’m doing.
aI agree with you, southern food is deadly good!! You’re making me hungry just reading your post. And don’t even mention Mexican food, when I go to Texas I go into a Mexican food coma I eat so much. Enjoy the trip!

Comment by Pamela R on June 17, 2008 at 9:28 amWell, today it was BBQ. Now, we’re from the KC area but I have to say that was the BEST BBQ I’ve ever eaten in my life. I’m going to write about it at ElectricVenom.com… just as soon as I recover from my pork-induced coma.
Comment by Chubby Mommy on June 17, 2008 at 4:03 pmThey say everything is bigger in Texas. I bet that would also apply to me somehow. I would most certainly leave the state bigger than when I got there! I’ve never really had southern food as I’ve never been that far south, but it does sound delish. Good luck with your calorie counting!

And its usually the time when I want to look the best! Erin is right though, a bit of exercise does help a bit.
I have a cute product review opportunity that you might be interested in…I know you don’t really do beauty product reviews but it might be fun. E-mail me if you’d like some deets ![]()
I live in Louisiana, about 10 miles from the Texas border. Not only do I have to fight the urge to indulge in everything fried and BBQ to die for, there’s the cajun food too.
Sweating it off doesn’t work, or I’d be model skinny by now.
I hear KC has some great BBQ too, so maybe you should just stick with the Mexican while you’re in Austin ![]()

Back from our trip and, much to my surprise, I’m two pounds lighter. This, despite eating my way through Central Texas!
There’s definitely something to be said for spending half your day walking. I got to eat everything I wanted — fried okra, BBQ, chicken fried steak (well, chicken fried everything), my Mom’s lemon pie and butter cookies and STILL lost weight.
Another bonus: getting on my treadmill to walk a couple of miles on Monday’s going to seem like a breeze compared to the 5+ miles I must’ve walked every day while we were there.

Write it up and call it the tourism diet.
