Joi Finds Joy As A Vegan

Well-known and widely respected blogger Joi Ito made a decision six months ago to give up his bad habits and replace them with a Vegan lifestyle. No more meat, no more smoking, no more excessive drinking. How’d it work out?

Other than some allergies, I’ve gotten rid every one of half-a-dozen or so chronic conditions, including obesity, fatty liver, high uric acid (gout), heartburn/ulcers/stomach acid, nervous tension, sleeping problems and rising cholesterol. I also have more energy than I’ve ever had.

Oh, yes, and he lost 40 pounds.

  1. gah. I don’t know.

Veganocity sure sounds like “You’ll live 275 years and hate every meal of it.” to me.

Well, I doubt I’ll ever fully give up red meat — I love steak and burgers too much — but I did pick up a bunch of those “MorningStar” and “Boca” pseudo-meat products at the store on Friday.

The BBQ riblets were surprisingly good and just 4 grams of fat. Woot!

I even got my son to eat a MorningStar veggie burger. I figure, he gets enough fat in his other snacks, but he never gets enough veggies. He will now: he ate two! Then he told me we need to buy more, and I will.

Had the “breakfast sausage” from Boca this morning with cheese-and-chive-flavored scrambled Egg Beaters. All of 3 grams of fat and plenty of flavor.

I may not go vegan, or even wholly vegetarian, but I certainly have been enjoying these low-guilt foods that taste so much like the “no no” things I like to eat.
